Exponentia and TSN Unveil First Live '3-Screen' Mobile Sports Game During 2006 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship
Toronto, ON | December 19, 2005
Exponentia and TSN today announced a world-first '3-screen' sports prediction game, combining online and mobile game play with TSN's live coverage of the 2006 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. The game, entitled PlayAction, allows hockey fans across Canada to predict key plays in the tournament online and on their mobile devices. This '3-screen' version - named for the combination of TV, Computer and Mobile - is an extension of last year's successful PlayAction mobile game during the World Juniors on TSN. PlayAction launches December 20 to coincide with Team Canada's first exhibition game and TSN's first broadcast of the tournament. Sponsored by Molson, PlayAction will continue throughout the entire World Juniors tournament, which can be seen on TSN through the Gold Medal Game on January 5. PlayAction gives fans the chance to make predictions throughout each game, including who will score the next goal, who will draw the next penalty, and the final score. Fans are also able to make three picks in advance of each game: Which team will score the first goal? Which team will get the first penalty? Which team will win the game? Points are awarded for correct predictions, and the fan that racks up the most points over the span of the World Juniors will have a chance to win a Home Theatre. To play, fans are invited to log on to www.TSN.ca to launch the PlayAction game module and follow along online, submitting picks as the game progresses. Fans who are at the arena, at a sports bar, or on the move can play along via their mobile phone browser. Last year, PlayAction became an instant success during the World Juniors with more than 4,500 picks and 115,000 interactions occurring throughout the two-week tournament. "We are excited to have an innovative brand partner like Molson involved with PlayAction on TSN. They have a great vision for new forms of interactive media and ways to engage youth," said Andrew Gregory, Principal at Exponentia. "Our objective for the platform is to have all live sports be PlayAction-enabled, wherever in the world they occur." "Mobile data service is the latest in a long line of technological advancements that have captured the attention of sports fans worldwide," said Phil King, President, TSN. "The success of PlayAction during last year's World Juniors was remarkable and we look forward to another exciting year." The 2006 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship takes place in British Columbia, and TSN has coverage from December 20 to January 5 with a total of 14 games, including all of Team Canada's match-ups, two preliminary round games not involving Team Canada, the quarter-finals, semifinals, Bronze Medal Game, Gold Medal Game and two exhibition games. All non-exhibition games will be televised in High Definition on TSN HD. The last time this event was held in Canada was 2003 in Halifax, when the Gold Medal Game attracted the largest audience in TSN history with 3.5 million viewers*.
