Exponentia and TSN Launch Live Mobile Sports Game for 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship
Toronto, Canada | December 23, 2004
Exponentia and TSN today unveiled PlayAction, a new mobile prediction game timed to the upcoming broadcast of the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship beginning Saturday on TSN. The joint venture, the latest initiative in a series of mobile developments between Exponentia and TSN, allows hockey fans across Canada to predict every key moment of the tournament on their mobile phone. To play, fans start their mobile browser then simply choose PlayAction on their phone. The game then prompts players to submit their picks live throughout the game. Who will score the next goal? Which team will win? Will a powerplay goal be scored? PlayAction is already active, and fans are encouraged to log on in advance of the tournament and make three predictions for each game: which team will score the first goal, which team will get the first penalty and which team will win the game. Points are awarded for correct predictions. The fan that racks up the most points over the span of the World Junior hockey tournament will win a mobile phone with free airtime. "The mobile phone is the perfect device for large-scale audience interactivity. Almost everyone already has one, and people carry their phones with them whether they are at home, at the sports bar, or in-stadium," said Andrew Gregory, Principal at Exponentia. "Our objective for the platform is to have all live sports be PlayAction-enabled, wherever in the world they occur." "The World Junior hockey tournament is the ideal event to launch PlayAction. The timing couldn't be better with a country starved for hockey," said Phil King, President, TSN. "Mobile data services is a relatively new venture for TSN and Exponentia has been an excellent partner in exploring this area with us." TSN will televise the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship from Grand Forks, N.D. from December 25 to January 4. Coverage includes all of Team Canada's games, five preliminary round matches not involving Team Canada, plus the quarter-finals, semifinals, Bronze Medal Game and Gold Medal Game.
